International Association for Women Judges - Uganda Chapter

The International Association for Women Judges - Uganda Chapter (IAWJ - U) is a non-governmental organization composed of over 86 Judicial Officers who are focused on enforcing women's rights and increasing women's access to the legal system.  IAWJ - U is a long-time active member of the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) and hosted the IAWJ Seventh Biennial International Conference in May 2004 with the theme, "Increasing Women's Access to Justice".

The International Association for Women Judges - Uganda Chapter(IAWJ - U) was established in March,1994 in Kampala, Uganda.

A new executive was elected at an AGM and the new President of the Association is Hon. Lady Justice Elizabeth Jane Alvidza.

OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSES:

With the objective of benefiting all people in the world by improving the status of women through the fair administration of justice, the specific objects of the International Association for Women Judges - Uganda Chapter are as enunciated in the by-laws of the international Association of Women Judges.

  • To encourage and assist the organization and operation of national associations of women judges and contribute to the services the association provides to its members, the communities and the nation.
  • To provide a clearing house and resource centre to disseminate information affecting women judges.
  • To engage in research, study and international, regional and national conference, judicial exchanges and training programmes which contribute to the understanding and resolution of critical legal issues facing women.
  • To encourage co-operation and collaboration between women judges of all nations.
  • To contribute to the development of human rights law so that the legal - judicial systems promote and protect the rights of women on an equal basis.
  • To address other important issues related to the improvement and advancement of women in the legal - judicial systems.
  • Further, to maintain the honour and integrity of the bench and promote standards of professional ethics and strong and efficient independent judiciary at all levels
  • To improve the administration of justice by advocating for the rule of law and in particular by educating the public especially women and children of the importance and meaning of the rule of law.
  • To encourage and assist the organization and operation of the International Association of Women Judges and contribute to the services the Association provides to its members, the communities and the nation.
  • To urge an increase in the number of women judges so that the judiciary more appropriately reflects an equal role for men and women in society.
  • To liaise with other human rights organizations in advocating for the rule of law.
